Hino Rei (Raye Hino) is the reincarnation of the Princess of Mars. She transforms into the Passionate Senshi in red, Sailor Mars. She is a miko (shrine maiden) who resides at the Hikawa Shrine (Cherry Hill Temple) and attends T*A (Brookdale) Private Girls School (a Catholic institution run by nuns). She is very popular and well liked at her school. She belongs to the Archery club, which provides the basis for her most powerful weapon: the Mars Arrow.
Sailor Mars was the second member of the Guardian (Inner) Senshi to be discovered by Sailor Moon. She is considered the secondary leader of the Sailor Team, after Sailor Venus. Her life is highly influenced by spirituality (particularly in the manga). She can command fire and flame during battle and has strong psychic abilities, which help her fulfill her role as a Shinto Priestess. She is skilled in the martial arts and meditation techniques. She uses ofuda (anti-evil scrolls) to vanquish evil entities.
Rei's role in the series remains basically the same throughout the different versions of the story. She is featured in the five seasons of Sailor Moon and in two different manga short stories. The first of these stories is Casablanca Memories, which is solely about her past. The second is entitled Rei and Minako's Girls School Battle, which also features Aino Minako as a central character.
Sailor Mars shows a strong affinity with two crows who also reside at the Hikawa Shrine: Phobos and Deimos. In the manga, they reveal themselves to Rei as a child and play a larger role in her life, as "guardians" who come from the planet Coronis. They can transform into humans that look exactly alike. Not much is known about these two in the anime, other than the fact they serve as guardians to Rei and can sense evil around them.
Rei is portrayed slightly different in her manga and anime versions. In the manga, she is calm, serious, reserved, practical, and distrusting of most men, encouraging her friends to stay away from romantic relationships. In the anime, she is boy-crazy, stubborn, quick-tempered, ambitious, longing to become a model, singer, and wife. She has much musical talent and really enjoys pop culture. She can sing, play the piano and the guitar, and she composes her own songs (as seen during a school festival). Overall, she remains more of a typical teenager than her manga counterpart.
The Senshi in red is rather admired by her beauty, grace, and elegance. Those very same traits even lead Luna to suspect she could be the Princess they had been searching for. Rei's distant nature usually keeps her from developing close friendships, and her psychic abilities even make some somewhat afraid of her. Regardless, she considers the Sailor Senshi her best friends, often times assuming the role of a "big sister". Her seemingly detached and tough front is eventually overcome by her true affections, charm, and wit.
Early in the series, Rei and Usagi (Serena) seem to have a rather turbulent relationship. They argue and bicker frequently. Rei even expresses her lack of confidence in Usagi as the leader of the Sailor Senshi, claiming herself as better suited for the role. To make things even more difficult between them, they end up developing major crushes on Mamoru (Darien).
Eventually Rei and Usagi develop a strong and close friendship. After the identity of the Moon Princess is revealed, Rei sets her feelings aside for Mamoru and gives Usagi her unwavering support and loyalty. In the manga, Rei is Usagi's confidante and vice versa. She is the only one out of the Inner Senshi to address Usagi without honorifics (which shows how very close they are).
* Spoiler alert * In the first season's finale, she gives her life up for Usagi. In Sailor Stars, after Sailor Galaxia kills the Inner Senshi, it is Sailor Mars to whom Sailor Moon immediately rushes to.
Rei's mother died when she was very young. She was left under the care of her grandfather (Ojii-san), the head priest at the Hikawa Shrine. Her father (given the name of Hino Takashi in PGSM) is a famous politician, who is much involved in his career to be an active part of Rei's life (in the live-action version, however, he tries to be part of her life). He visits Rei every year on her birthday, always giving her a bouquet of Casablanca lilies and a white dress, picked out by his secretary, Kaidou. Not surprisingly, Rei holds a resentment towards her father that significantly impairs her future relationships with men (particularly in the live-action series, in which her grandfather does not appear).
As already mentioned, the manga and live-action Rei has a low opinion of men and is not interested in romantic involvement. There is, however, one exception in the Casablanca Memories. Rei eventually finds herself in love with her father's secretary, Kaidou, who showed her much kindness while growing up. Her heart is broken when he reveals his engagement to another girl and his decision to pursue a political career, despite the fact he once expressed his discontent with what had happened to her family due to her father's involvement in politics. Given his passion for politics, she couldn't believe he had chosen another bride when she was the daughter of such an influential political figure. In the live-action series, Rei is without a doubt uninterested in men. In the anime, however, she expresses more of an interest in men. In the first season, she dates Mamoru (even though he is only interested in friendship), and she eventually shows romantic interest in Yuichiro (Chad), her grandfather's apprentice. While nearing death during one episode, she even admits to wishing she had kissed him when she had the chance.
Love her or hate her, Sailor Mars is one of the most powerful, fascinating, misunderstood, and loyal characters of Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon.
